Frequently Asked Questions

Must the foal's parents be registered in the Czech Sport Horse Studbook?

Yes. For a foal to be registered in the Czech Sport Horse Studbook, both its parents must be registered in the Czech Sport Horse Studbook.

However, this does not mean that both parents must be of the Czech Sport Horse breed. Horses of other breeds can also be registered in the CS Studbook under specified conditions, provided they meet the requirements of the Studbook Regulations and the CS Studbook breeding program.

In other words: a foal's parent can be, for example, a Holsteiner, Hanoverian, etc., but for the offspring to be registered in the CS Studbook, this parent must also be registered in the CS Studbook.

I have a Czech Sport Horse. Is it automatically registered in the Czech Sport Horse Studbook?

Yes and no. It is necessary to distinguish between breed affiliation, automatic registration, and actual studbook entry.

A horse born as a Czech Sport Horse is registered in the Czech Sport Horse Studbook and issued a horse passport. Simultaneously, it undergoes automatic registration into the relevant section of the studbook in the year it reaches three years of age.

However, this automatic registration does not replace the physical entry into the studbook, which takes place at mare inspections or during individual registration with the breeder. During this entry, the mare or stallion is assessed by a commission, its conformation is evaluated, and a linear description is performed.

In other words, every Czech Sport Horse is part of the studbook's records, but to obtain a complete breeding evaluation and be classified into the relevant studbook sections, a physical entry is necessary.

How do I report a change of horse owner?

The transfer of horse ownership must be reported within 30 working days using the Change Notification form – owner change. The form must be signed by both the new and previous owner. Detailed information and the downloadable form can be found in the section Change of Horse Owner.

How long does it take to issue a horse passport?

Ideally, issuing a horse passport takes approximately 2 to 2.5 months from the foal's registration. This assumes that all necessary documents were provided during identification, the DNA sample is successfully evaluated by the laboratory, and all documents required for registration were submitted on time.

The time to issue a passport may be extended, for example, in the event of:

  • the need for repeated DNA sampling due to an unsuitable or insufficient sample,

  • missing or incorrectly completed documents,

  • an unsubmitted breeding certificate,

  • unpaid mare registration fee for the studbook, if registration is required,

  • late submission of documents for processing,

  • an increased number of applications during the main registration season.

Each passport can only be issued after receiving complete documentation, verifying DNA parentage, and fulfilling all conditions set for horse registration.

What is the purpose of registering a mare in the studbook?

Registering a mare in the studbook is a prerequisite for registering her offspring in the Czech Sport Horse Studbook. It is also required for participation in the Young Horse Criterion (KMK) and for the basic performance tests of three-year-old mares.

Furthermore, mare evaluation serves to control heredity, monitor the development of the breeding population, and provides data for genetic evaluation and breeding work.
